Solution to Game Freezing During Intro Movie
A guild member had a Rift crash during which her Rift client reset (i.e. rift.cfg got deleted). While the intro movie would start, hitting Esc to skip it would result in the client freezing. Allowing the movie to play through did not resolve the problem. I was able to reproduce the problem exactly by renaming my rift.cfg (and hence allowing the client to create a new one). As was the case with my guild member, the intro movie caused client freezes.
The typical recommendation for this problem is to delete rift.cfg. Obviously this does not resolve the problem in this case as the default rift.cfg does not include the parameters to skip the intro movie. I am writing this thread in the hopes that my efforts may help someone else avoid the same problem.
Step 1: Access your rift.cfg
There are numerous ways to access rift.cfg, but this is the most straightforward in my opinion. Bring up the Run dialog either by using the keyboard combination Windows-R or by right-clicking on the start button (Windows 8/10) and selecting Run:

The location of the rift.cfg is C:\users\<username>\appdata\roaming\Rift. For simplicity, or for users who do not show hidden files, this case be accessed by typing %appdata%/rift. This will open the folder in which rift.cfg resides.
Step 2: Add a line to rift.cfg
Open rift.cfg in a program such as Notepad. Add the following lines anywhere in the file (at the bottom is best):
[Movies]
PlayedIntroMovie = True
Summary
If players are stuck on the introductory movie, the above process will allow players to bypass the movie and access the game. I will continue to monitor this thread in case anyone has questions.
